Growing your own vegetables

Geoff Hodge as always gave a very enthusiastic presentation on Growing your own vegetables and is demonstrating in the picture above the importance of well prepared good friable soil with plenty of air in it to encourage strong growth. Raised beds have the advantage of heating up earlier than the surrounding soil with the added benefit that you never walk on them and so do not compact the soil.

Empty two litre plastic drink bottles also had many uses for the gardener as they could be used as propagators when empty or provide a slow means of irrigation when full of water but with small holes cut in the cap.

Geoff was very generous in providing the Society with extra prizes for the raffle - It is hoped the use of the snow shovel and last year’s yellow snow alerts remain just memories for this year!
